We are a group of students from the University of Hong Kong working on our course LCOM3001: Cultural Dimensions of Language and Communication instructed by Dr Lisa Lim. In this website, we are glad to share our insight(s) on some language and identity issues regarding African community workers in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, please join us in exploring some interesting aspects about Africa.

WHO WE ARE?
Attention!!! Get ready!
Hey! Please be reminded that in our analysis, we will be looking at language and identity of African community works from two different scholarly perspectives. Our first perspective concerns the notion that fixed cultural identity is tied to a certain language and we will look at whether there are language shift among these African families in Hong Kong and how does that induces a generational change in cultural recogniton.
As for our second perspective, we will be assuming another scholarly trend that soical identity is fluid and communicatvely constructed. We want to justify our views that as multilingual speakers with mutiple social roles, these African community workers are indeed creative users of linguistic resources to intentionally project certain versions of themselves for the social purpose of image building.
